About Literacy Nassau 5K

The 1st Annual Literacy Nassau DYSLEXIA DASH will take place on Sunday, November 4, 2018 in Eisenhower Park!

The event features a professional pre-race warm-up & stretch, a professional announcer, live DJ, one of a kind Literacy Nassau event gear, and an amazing time with friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and other charitable individuals like yourself.   Our 5K run/walk is a great way to raise funds and awareness for a great cause!

Eisenhower Park is a 930 acre oasis of open space and recreation in the heart of Nassau County. The Park is one of the largest public spaces in the New York metropolitan area – even larger than Central Park.

Dyslexia: A Hidden Disability

Not everyone can read this sentence.

1 in 5 children and adults on Long Island have a language based learning disability, such as dyslexia.  Tutoring can be extremely costly, and many families cannot afford the high prices charged by private tutors or learning centers.

For the past 50 years, Literacy Nassau has been teaching adults how to read, write and speak English thanks to the help of countless volunteers who train with us to be adult literacy tutors.  We have paved the way for thousands of immigrants and low-literate American-born adults to find access to meaningful jobs, U.S. Citizenship, and many other personal goals. All of our programs are offered at no cost to our students; instead, we ask them to offer whatever donation they are able to afford.

In 2016, we received a grant to expand our services to children with learning disabilities.   Using licensed Orton-Gillingham instructors, we provide private, 1:1 tutoring to children as many times a week as is necessary to successfully teach them how to read.   These services can cost up to $200 per hour at a private clinic.   At Literacy Nassau, families pay what they can afford - because we believe every child has the right to learn to read.

Make A Difference: Run With Us!

Lace up your sneakers and join us for a fun-filled, healthy morning in the park!  Registering for the DYSLEXIA DASH is easy and costs only $25.  Once you're registered, ask your family and friends to support you by pledging money towards your run.  All funds raised by this event will support our capital campaign, as we prepare to move into our new location in Wantagh this fall.

Our new home, located at 1 Ivy Lane, was formerly a Catholic elementary school.  Located 1/4 mile south of the Southern State Parkway at exit 28S, the current space is comprised of four (4) adjacent classrooms.  We are converting the four rooms into a self-contained tutoring/training center by creating a long hallway along the north end that connects the rooms from within.  We are building our own main entry directly from the parking lot, with ample signage and handicap accessibility.  View the details of our plans to create space for 1:1 and small group tutoring, training, and administrative offices here: http://www.literacynassau.org/capitalfund

Our goal is to be up and running for the start of the 2018-19 school year, with a grand opening celebration to be held in late November/early December.
